Gayle and Anne
Whitsell moved to Lake Stevens in the late
1940’s. Gayle taught industrial arts at Lake
Steven High School for 29 years and was so
highly thought of that the yearbook was
dedicated to him in 4 different decades. He
coached a variety of sports and taught traffic
safety for over 20 years. From the beginning of
his career until long after his retirement,
Gayle was the voice of the Vikings at home
football and basketball games. In addition Gayle
served as a City Council Member, and for seven
years, its mayor. As an active member of
Kiwanis, he helped build our library and was
known as the “Golden Voice of Aquafest.” In the
greater community, Gayle helped form the
Snohomish County DUI Task Force. The Gayle
Whitsell Award is given annually at the County
DUI Awards Ceremony to a person or group which
exemplifies the dedication and community
involvement which Gayle’s life demonstrated.
It is said behind every great man is an even
greater woman. Anne Whitsell was just that
woman. Her long time commitment to her husband
took her on many great adventures all the while
having a great love for the Lake Stevens
Community. Her passion was in preserving the
history and memories of Lake Stevens. She was
instrumental in forming the Lake Stevens
Historical Society and building our Museum to
what it is today.
Gayle and Anne have both passed but have left us
the memories that will forever inspire us to
give more of ourselves to our community.
